Electronic servers approved for Atlantic City casinos

RAISING THE GAME

A move to take Atlantic City slot machines, recently hit by increasing competition from neighbouring states, to the next level has been approved by New Jersey gambling regulators. Electronic servers, or Server-Supported Slot Systems, can now be used by casino operators to change the games on offer and the minimum stake wagered, allowing more flexibility on the gaming floor.

The technology permits the operator to rapidly alter the gaming mix on the casino floor, offering customers an enhanced gaming experience. It is anticipated that in the future gamblers themselves will be able to select the games they want to play, but it is thought unlikely that the option will be offered for at least a couple of years.

Although as yet no casino in Atlantic City has requested server gaming, the regulator has said that from 1 October any casino can apply to test the new technology. Some casino operators have expressed interest in electronic poker and roulette machines, approved for pilot programmes earlier this year. These allow for more rapid play than at traditional gaming tables. (E-09.06.07)
