Another country looks to boost tourist industry

FIRST CASINO FOR ST LUCIA

St Lucia, which advertises itself as ‘simply beautiful,’ has won accolades as the World’s Best Weddings & Honeymoon Destination and the Caribbean Leading Spa. Diving, windsurfing, sailing, hiking and trail riding, not to mention the Carnival, jazz and cricket, are just some of the available activities on this eastern Caribbean island, and before long tourists will be able to add a visit to a casino.

Proposals for a casino on St Lucia have, in the past, been dismissed after opposition from religious leaders and political parties. However, the St Lucia Labour Party, voted into power on the island in 1997, has since reversed its stand and approved plans for a casino. The project is for a location about ten miles to the north of the capital Castries, which is in the northwest of the island, and the casino could be open by December.

Biloxi-based Treasure Bay Corp LLC, the management company, will operate 350 slot machines and 14 gaming tables in a 15,000 sq ft casino. The government of St Lucia, as many other governments around the world, hopes that a casino will boost tourism to the island and provide revenue. It should also provide 300 full-time employment posts. (E-02.01.06)
