Enraged regulars at the Gaborone Sun Casino Resort in Botswana have complained to a local newspaper about a possible prize draw scam in a casino promotion. Since the beginning of the year it appears that one man has repeatedly held the winning numbers drawn from the rotating drum used to hold players’ tickets. At one draw he held four of the six lucky tickets, at another five out of eight. He had previously been seen emptying a carrier bag full of tickets into the drum.
A complaint was lodged with the casino manager but it is unclear whether the tickets were forged. Rumour has it that casino employees were involved in the scam, and had given the man around 3000 tickets. As yet neither the man in question, who is said to be well-known in Gaborone, nor casino officials have commented on the occurrence but an internal investigation is understood to be ongoing.
Sun International’s Gaborone Sun offers 24-hour slot machine play with linked progressive jackpots and state-of-the-art technology, including video slots and smart cards. Like all casinos, however, it can still fall prey to low-tech scams as well as high-tech ones when vigilance is caught napping. One man’s ‘winning’ streak apparently went unchallenged for nearly two weeks until irate customers complained. (E-02.06.08)
