Tasmanian Gaming Commission reports to Parliament

GAMBLERS LOSE A$5 MILLION MORE

The three-person Tasmanian Gaming Commission has released its annual report to the State Parliament. The independent Commission is required to regulate and control gaming and to investigate and make recommendations to the Minister on matters relating to gaming policy. It must also take a proactive role in relation to the development and implementation of consumer protection and harm minimisation initiatives, as well as keep abreast of emerging trends and new technologies.

In April the Commission published its 2007 Operating Statement outlining its responsibilities and strategic priorities, as there had previously been some confusion over its role, responsibilities and independence. Serious disciplinary action has been taken against Licensed Premises Gaming Licence holders for not enforcing the Commission’s rules. A training programme known as Responsible Conduct of Gaming has been initiated, with registered training organisations involved.

In December 2006 the Tasmanian Treasurer announced a Social and Economic Impact Study into gambling in the state. The study is to be completed by 31 March 2008 and will analyse and assess the social and economic impact of gambling. Tasmanians lost around A$5 million more gambling this financial year than last, mostly on poker machines. The ‘pokies’ accounted for nearly A$204 million out of a total A$265 million gambled.
