Undaunted by the odds, a new casino cruise is getting ready to set sail from Freeport in Texas. Casino ships have so far not had much success sailing from the Lone Star State; the Magic Mermaid, Texas Treasure and Surfside Princess have all foundered in their attempts to transport gamblers out to sea. The Texas Star is optimistic that a sound financial base will lead to the new cruise ship prospering where others have failed.
Freeport City Council and its Mayor are adopting a wait-and-see policy. The Council has agreed to an extension of a specific-use permit for a boarding facility and is happy to assist the Texas Star so long as it abides by the law. The company will be training employees and will open a 400-seat bingo parlour within the boarding facility. The ship is to offer table games, slot machines and poker plus a full bar and stage for live entertainment. Gamblers who have missed the boat will be able to catch a three-hourly shuttle out to the ship during its 12-hour voyage in the Gulf of Mexico.
Originally the Texas Star cruises were due to commence in July last year. Delays in changing from a Sierra Leone flag to an American flag and the prolonged and severe hurricane season have contributed to the launch being later than anticipated. The US Coast Guard has still to make its final inspection but once completed the vessel is ready to set sail with its gambling passengers who will have paid a US$10 entry fee to the 3-level casino ship. It is hoped that the first gambling cruise will leave port in days rather than weeks. (E-02.28.06)
