New casino resort close to Vietnam border

Titan King Casino to be launched next week

In mid-2008 the CEO of NagaCorp Ltd, Tan Sri Chen Lip Keong, said that as the monopoly casino operator in Phnom Penh it would consider selling a licence to a foreign operator, giving it the right to develop a new gaming property in the city. NagaCorp possesses a licence to run any number of casinos within 200 km (124 miles) of Phnom Penh until 2065. However, a report from Reuters and a new hotel casino website suggests that a Cambodian businessman will launch a US$100 million casino near the country's border with Vietnam this month, just 75 miles from Phnom Penh.

The Titan King Casino is located in Bavet in the province of Svay Rieng. According to the website titankingcasino.com, it is ‘poised to be the largest hotel casino in Cambodia’. Restaurants offer Chinese, Japanese and Western cuisine and the gaming hall offers a free 24-hour buffet to players. The gaming floor includes slot machines, blackjack, baccarat, roulette, fan-tan, 3 card poker, Titan poker and more. VIP rooms and suites are available for groups or guests seeking privacy when gaming, and Titan King also provides an online gambling service.

Scheduled to open on 26 February, the main market will be Vietnamese and other foreigners including Chinese and Malaysian. In 2009 there was a fall in gaming revenue to around US$17.5 million at Cambodia’s 29 casinos, attributed to the global economic crisis and tension arising along the Thai border. Last year many of the casinos saw a reduction in the number of gamblers arriving from Thailand, once a major market. Titan King owner Kith Thieng, Vice Chairman and MD of The Royal Group, said that the casino had taken 3 years to build. The 4-star hotel covers 8 floors and has 200 rooms. The casino resort is built on 6 hectares of land in Bavet, the ninth casino to be built in the area, and will employ 1,500 people. (E-02.16.09)
