Fairmont Hotels & Resorts claims to be the largest luxury hotel company in North America, offering a superior guest experience ‘from the beaches of Hawaii and Bermuda to the heart of New York City.” The company states that its resorts are situated in some of the most breathtaking and pristine areas in the world, and that properties such as the Fairmont Miramar Santa Monica and The Fairmont San Francisco are steeped in history and are city landmarks.
Tumbes in northwest Peru, close to the border with Ecuador, dates back to pre-Inca times. The warm tropical climate and some of the finest beaches in Peru make the region ideal for tourism, particularly as within a relatively small area there is a variety of ecosystems ranging from mangroves to dry forests and from the only coastal tropical forests in the country to a warm sea ideal for scuba diving and surfing. Just south of Tumbes are hot mineral springs where visitors can swim.
Fairmont Raffles Hotels International is a Canadian-based hotel chain owned by Colony Capital, LLC. The group manages four brands of hotels under their arm, Raffles, Fairmont, Swissôtel and Delta, with 128 hotels and resorts in 23 destinations worldwide. At a press conference last week it was announced that Fairmont would construct a hotel casino complex at La Florida beach in Tumbes. Construction on a 1500-room hotel, casino, 5 pools, golf course, tennis courts, gymnasium, restaurants and a pier for aquatic sports is expected to start in September.
The US$264 million hotel development will be the largest in Peru and take around two years to complete. The regional government of Tumbes has signed an agreement whereby a 5-mile stretch of the Pacific Ocean will be used for ecotourism. The whole project has been declared a ‘6-star’ development, maintaining the Fairmont/Raffles tradition of being a key player in the luxury hotel sector. (E-07.02.08)
