The $A475 million makeover of Star City casino, announced in the Chairman’s message in Tabcorp’s 2008 Annual Report, features a literal turnaround for the property. Thirteen years ago Star City was built facing away from the harbour in Sydney and the 3-year project to expand and refurbish the complex will reposition it overlooking both the harbour and city. The Tabcorp investment is intended to turn the casino and hotel complex into the leading entertainment destination in Sydney.
The project includes a new 5-star hotel, nearly 30 new restaurants and bars, a new retail galleria and an expansion of the Main Gaming Floor. The project is expected to start in early 2009 and be completed in 2011. A priority for Tabcorp is to step up capital investment in existing businesses so as to position the company for growth in two to three years time, particularly in
casinos.
The existing Star Theatre will be adapted so that it can be used as a cinema as well as for concerts, fashion parades and live broadcasts. The theatre redevelopment will also include a sports betting area. It is thought that an outdoor gaming area may be included in the project, which now needs approval from the New South Wales Planning Minister. The development application for the new look Star City will be on public display from 24 September. (E-09.23.08)
