Little by little casinos come to Mexico

VIVA LAS VEGAS IN MATAMOROS

It caused an outcry in Mexico when outgoing Secretary of State Santiago Creel authorised more gaming licences in one month than had previously been issued between 1917 and 2004. The decision, immediately called into question, was proclaimed to be valid last month and many new betting centres are already functional. There are plenty of vociferous anti-gambling factions in Mexico, including the Church, but it would appear that little by little the first casinos in the country may slip in by the back door.

Matamoros and Brownsville straddle the border between Texas and the State of Tamaulipas. The United States has its oldest continuously active diplomatic post in Matamoros, which is just a five minute stroll away from Brownsville. Americans cross the border in large numbers to shop, eat, and now to gamble in Mexico. Tomorrow the second Viva Las Vegas Casino will open in the city and there are plans for four more. US businessman James Vaan and partners from both sides of the border intend to bring a little of Las Vegas south of the Rio Grande.

There should be three Viva Las Vegas casinos operational by September. The first is busy with as many as 700 customers a day, and it is hoped that the 100 slot machines and sports betting at the second will prove to be equally popular. Both Brownsville and Matamoros stand to benefit from increased tourism and gambling dollars. The Mexican legislature has yet to allow table gaming but the prospect of jobs and tax dollars for the local community make a mini Las Vegas an attractive proposition. (E-08.15.06)
