In May last year the privately held luxury resort developer Asian Coast Development Ltd (ACDL) was presented with an official investment certificate in Vietnam’s capital Ho Chi Minh City. The former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien was at the ceremony in his capacity as special advisor to ACDL, the company that plans a $4.2 billion hotel and casino resort on the beachfront in Vung Tau Province in southern Vietnam.
At the time Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said “"I believe that the Ho Tram project in Ba Ria - Vung Tau will prove to be a huge success and will open up various ongoing opportunities for economic, commercial and investment co-operation between Vietnam and Canada in the years to come." The Ho Tram project, the largest foreign investment in the country, is being designed by Steelman Partners, one of Las Vegas' premier architectural firms.
The Vietnamese government is in the process of consulting with Nevada gaming authorities in order to draw up the country’s gaming regulations. ACDL says that despite the present unfavourable economic climate the project is progressing well. The first phase of the Ho Tram development, scheduled to open in 2011, will have approximately 90 table games, 1000 electronic games, live entertainment stages, luxury dining, nightlife, and an exclusive VIP area.
