A catalyst to revitalise tourist attractions

First WAP licence in Malawi

At Colony Club Casino in Blantyre, Malawi, last Friday there was the official launch of the Wide Area Progressive (WAP) licence received by KaiRo International. In Africa Malawi is just the second country to licence WAPs and Malawi Gaming Board Chairperson Scholastica Chidyaonga was present at the occasion. She called for Malawi to revitalise the gaming industry and change gambling’s negative perceptions that are held by many Africans.

KaiRo International currently has investments and developments in South Africa, Tanzania, Malawi and Ghana. The Colony Club Casino, set in exquisite gardens on a hillside overlooking Blantyre, opened in December 2002. The Malawi Development Corporation (MDC) invited KaiRo International to Malawi to be their partner in this casino project and to develop the gaming industry in Malawi.

At last October’s 6th Annual Conference for Gambling Regulators Africa Forum (GRAF), Mrs Chidyaonga appealed for gaming operators and investors to ensure that well-qualified personnel were employed to maintain effective and quality services, and added that it was disappointing that women’s involvement in the gaming industry remained limited despite GRAF efforts to enrol them.

Speaking on the subject of the WAP licence last Friday, Mrs Chidyaonga said, “The WAP project is not only complicated but new in Malawi and this part of Africa. However despite this, Colony has managed to implement it in a given period. The board is very pleased with this spirit of working and would like to commend management of Colony Club for a good job.”

She commented that WAP involves the use of Information Technology, that the licence was introduced to drive up tourism in the country and that the introduction of the system was to stimulate gambling through networking to rural towns and cities in the country. “It is the wish of government to revitalise its tourist attraction areas along the lake and other towns. The WAP project is the catalyst for that to happen. KaiRo is therefore encouraged to roll out its network in the soonest time possible.” (E-03.10.09)
