The results of the annual G2E Future Watch survey released at the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas last week show that the majority of industry experts expect online gaming to be legalised in the US sometime in the next few years. More than a third of those polled think that online gambling revenues would reach as high as US$20 billion within five years of legalisation.
The American Gaming Association (AGA) reports that after weathering challenging economic conditions for almost two years, nearly half (47%) of gaming professionals think that the state of the industry finally is beginning to improve. “Without a doubt, the gaming industry faces a long road to recovery,” said Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., president and CEO of the AGA. “However, I consider these results a sign that there is optimism within our industry that we are turning a corner.”
However, nearly one-third of survey respondents (31%) said conditions within the industry remain depressed and are neither improving nor worsening, and 20% of those asked think the industry continues to decline. Many think the industry will not recover to pre-recession levels for at least another three to four years. (E-11.25.09)
