Two recent articles in UK newspapers demonstrate the increase in gambling activity by women. Whereas bingo was once considered the domain of the older generation and poker that of men, more young women are now trying their luck, particularly online. Around 40% of online poker players are estimated to be women. The local casinos and bingo halls have been quick to recognise the market potential of this group, and many run special events for birthday celebrations, student nights and hen parties.
In Scotland The Herald reports that more than 8.5 million people played bingo last year, with nearly half the players now under 45. Bingo is sometimes regarded by young women as a good night out that is cheaper than clubbing, an image that the industry is keen to promote since being hard hit by the smoking ban and double taxation. The speed of the games requires concentration and a certain amount of mental agility, and operators maintain that the game promotes social interaction.
Wales on Sunday reports that a lot more women now enter poker tournaments, and casinos are actively seeking to market to women. The increasing prominence of women in international tournaments is encouraging women of all ages to try their hand. The anonymity of playing poker online makes it a good training ground, with many women preferring to learn their skills at home before venturing into public.
The days that slot machines were a diversion for women while their partners were immersed in the serious business of table play have long gone. Slot machine manufacturers are using new technologies to make their games more entertaining for the younger generation. Bingo is modernising and the old ‘legs eleven’ style is being replaced. Poker is revamping and increasingly attracting female players. Gambling is becoming more about entertainment, with winning the added bonus. (E-04.21.08)
