A step forward for casino resort project in Wood Village

A FIRST FOR OREGON

There are plenty of gambling opportunities in the state of Oregon. Six racetracks and nine tribal casinos at present, but a commercial casino for Wood Village has long been under consideration. Last week three proposed initiatives were filed as a preliminary step towards getting them on the November 2008 ballot. Initiatives 140/141/142 would alter Oregon’s constitution to allow just one commercial casino, if enough signatures are collected.

Should voters approve the measures then plans for a resort casino with hotel, restaurants, theatre and other facilities will move forward, but it is likely that the residents of Wood Village will have the final say on the matter. Situated twelve miles east of Portland, Oregon the city was originally a planned community built to house aluminium workers during WWII. Wood Village was incorporated as a city in 1951.

Local Mayor Dave Fuller supports the project, which would give 25% of adjusted gross revenue from the casino resort to the state for public education, child health care funds and city and county budgets. Wood Village could expect to receive 3% of the revenue but the Mayor expects it will be an uphill battle for the casino promoters to get the initiatives passed. Mayors of neighbouring cities have already spoken of their opposition to a Wood Village casino resort. (E-11.28.07)
