Screened live around the world to millions of viewers, the World Cup 2006 in Germany is causing a stir. Fans and bookmakers are set to make it the most wagered event ever, and online operators are cashing in on the betting mania. Brazil remains favourite to take home the cup for an unprecedented sixth time, with England, Germany, France, Italy and Argentina all well backed.
With 64 games being played after the 9 June kick-off, there is plenty to attract a wager. Final results, number of goals scored and top goal scorer are just a few of the bets on offer. Betting patterns are becoming more sophisticated with equipment and refereeing factors taken into account. There has already been a 15% rise in spread betting over figures from the 2002 World Cup and television channels are betting on increased advertising and greater viewing numbers.
In Thailand some bookmakers have set up shop in neighbouring Myanmar to avoid trouble with Thai police. Five Myanmar casinos are reported to be hosting Thai gambling operations. The Thai police have been ordered to suppress gambling on World Cup matches and cooperation is now being sought from Myanmar police based in border towns.
Whether the wagers are legal or illegal, online or off, millions of dollars, pounds, euros and more will be bet before the final whistle blows on 9 July. There is already a betting frenzy and during the actual tournament betting action will be at fever pitch. More than a few records are expected to be broken at World Cup 2006, on and off the pitch.
