Workers offered redundancy or unpaid leave

Christchurch Casino remains closed

It is estimated that earthquake damage to New Zealand’s Christchurch Casino could be repaired within one month but despite this the building will remain closed due to its proximity to other unstable properties. With no definite timeline for the resumption of business, SKYCITY Entertainment is offering redundancy with four weeks pay or unpaid leave to some 520 casino workers. Staff at the casino have received six weeks pay since the earthquake caused the casino to close.

The Service and Food Workers’ Union already has advised its members not to accept redundancy and is calling for a better package for the casino workers. SFWU Tourism and Hospitality Industry Leader Len Richards says the Government moves to take charge of the reconstruction of Christchurch must take the lives of the workers of Christchurch into account. "The loss of more than 500 plus jobs at the Christchurch Casino, one of Canterbury's largest worksites, is the latest blow to hit Christchurch earthquake-devastated workers. The loss of jobs that has already occurred, plus the inevitable further job losses to come will create huge social costs."

The government now is considering the possibility of allowing the Christchurch casino licence the flexibility to move elsewhere. As it stands the licence is specifically for Christchurch but the Earthquake Recovery Bill could grant permission for the casino’s relocation. A few casino workers have moved to SKYCITY properties in Dunedin and Queenstown and the Auckland casino, which has over 100 available jobs, will give priority to Christchurch staff if they apply. However, the company says it will not pay relocation costs.

In Australia SKYCITY is pushing ahead with its planned $339 million expansion at Adelaide Casino, where the company sees good growth opportunities. In February the South Australian government commissioned a master plan for the Riverbank Precinct, which is home to its Parliament, the casino and the Adelaide Convention Centre. SKYCITY has submitted plans that feature new and expanded gaming facilities including private gaming areas, dedicated parking and new bars, restaurants and entertainment areas. (E-04.04.11)
