Estimated tax payment of US$57.5 million by CIE

45 NEW YAKS THIS YEAR

The Finance Director of the Corporacion Mexicana de Entretenimiento (CIE), listed on the Mexican stock exchange, has commented to local press that the company will pay around 600 million Mexican pesos (US$57.5 million) in gaming tax. CIE started to install gaming rooms in Mexico about eleven years ago and in 2007 was granted a licence for twenty more units comprising 45 establishments, including Yaks (electronic bingos), by the outgoing Minister of the Interior.

Jaime Zebada indicated that by the end of this year the company will have invested between US$2.5-3 million in opening new gaming rooms. He also said CIE would install additional gaming rooms that required little extra investment. “The 600 million pesos tax is a percentage of games and lottery sales and goes directly onto company outgoings. As we develop further in the industry, we shall cut our cloth according to operational requirements.”

According to official sources, the gaming and lottery industry in Mexico has 30,000 Class II electronic bingo gaming machines. Gaming sector analysts consider that the Mexican gaming industry will reach maturity when there is an installed base of some 180,000 gaming machines. (E-04.25.08)
