Pleasure and Leisure Corporation PLC runs Pleasure Beach Great Yarmouth, which it claims is East Anglia’s most popular tourist attraction. Pleasure Beach covers a 9-acre site on the seafront along Great Yarmouth’s Golden Mile and offers rides, water attractions, crazy golf and similar. There is now a plan to extend the Golden Mile with a £35 million (US$70 million) leisure complex.
Great Yarmouth was one of the Council’s awarded a large casino by the Casino Advisory Panel. This has yet to be confirmed by parliament but the 8 small and 8 large casino licences have caused little controversy, unlike the choice of Manchester for a super casino. Next week on 13th and 14th December a public exhibition will open in Great Yarmouth, detailing plans for The Edge leisure complex, with casino, 10-screen cinema, 22-lane bowling alley, 180-room hotel, restaurants and bars.
According to Albert Jones, MD of Pleasure Beach, the development will be built in a manner sympathetic to the existing area and will enhance the entertainment offering for both locals and tourists. Around 1,000 new jobs should result from the project, including 450 at the casino. Aspers, a joint venture between Aspinalls and Crown, is said to be interested in operating the casino if the licence is finally approved. (E-12.04.07)
