Singapore Problem Gambling Conference continues

Focus on addressing youth gambling

The Singapore Problem Gambling Conference 2009 started yesterday at the Orchard Hotel, close to Singapore’s Central Business District. The conference brings together local and international experts to share their insight on the latest research, prevention and treatment of problem gambling. This year special emphasis has been placed on understanding and addressing youth gambling.

Some of the topics being discussed at the 2-day conference include initiatives to prevent problem gambling and parental attitudes to youth gambling. Organised by the country’s National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and the National Addictions Management Service (NAMS), today’s programme includes a session on the impact of problem gambling within the family and a discussion on youth gambling activity, with the focus on internet gambling.

Last year’s gambling participation survey of over-18s in Singapore indicated that three-quarters of all gamblers started to gamble before they were 24 years old. Conducted by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, the report stated that overall gambling participation by Singapore residents is around 54%, with Chinese males of lower education and less personal income being the most likely to gamble.
