At a ceremony in December 2004 Zublin Grenada Limited handed over a new cruise port to the Government and people of Grenada, following the completion of the private/public enterprise, and announced its next planned development – the St George’s Revitalisation Project. At the time the SGRP investment required was estimated to be around US$400 million and to create 1000 to 1500 new jobs. Completion of the project to provide commercial, residential and tourist attraction sites and infrastructure improvements was expected to be in 2010.
In July last year Tillman Thomas became Prime Minister of Grenada and Zublin applied to the new government for a casino gambling licence, hoping for a more positive response than had been received from the former government. However, in an interview the Prime Minister stated that any such move must first be decided by public consultation, including giving recognition to the views of the anti-casino Church authorities.
Zublin maintains that a move to regulate and license casinos would make Grenada more attractive to tourists. Grenada’s Former Tourism Minister Brenda Hood is suggesting that before the government takes a decision on whether to grant Zublin a casino licence, the pros and corns should be examined. She feels that studies and interviews must be conducted to ascertain what benefits there would be for the country, and whether a casino should be only for visitors to the island. (E-03.10.09)
