January update from Bath & North East Somerset Council

Two Stage 2 applications for Small Casino licence

Following approval from government for Bath & North East Somerset Council to grant one small casino premises licence an invitation to apply for the licence was advertised in October 2010 with a closing date of 28 February 2011. Four applications for three sites, all owned by the Council, were received for the licence. Apollo Resorts and Leisure Limited, Gala Casinos Limited, Global Gaming Ventures Ltd (previously Great Eastern Quays Casino Limited, and Grosvenor Casinos Limited all cleared Stage 1 of the application process and were invited to proceed to Stage 2.

Two applications have been received by the Council, one from Apollo Resorts and Leisure and one from Global Gaming Ventures Ltd. Apollo is now teaming up with rival firm Gala, which has dropped its own plans for the Cattle Market, while Grosvenor has dropped plans for Manvers Street. The Apollo casino scheme also includes a hotel, shops, restaurants and bars at the Cattle Market site in Walcot Street.

Global Gaming's plan is for a casino, bars, restaurants and hotel at Sawclose.

The competing bids will now be evaluated for the best benefit for the area. This evaluation will be conducted by an independent panel backed-up with technical advisors with specialist knowledge in the field of casinos and gaming, including Chief Executive Andy McClellan of GamCare. The evaluation report will go before Bath and North East Somerset Council's licensing committee in March. (E-01.06.12)
