Once again Eilat is in the news as the possible location for a casino resort. Ministry of Tourism officials apparently are discussing plans to build a casino and conference centre in the Red Sea resort to bring in more revenue. The discussions are expected to include other Ministries, such as Interior, Culture and Sport, Industry, Trade and Tourism, as well as the Israel Police and the State Prosecutor's office.
The aim to turn Eilat into a congress centre for conferences and exhibitions is based on the success of places such as Las Vegas that make more revenue from this side of business than from the casinos. The casino is seen as an additional draw for tourists, which would bring extra jobs and a boost to the local economy.

over two years. The Minister then was convinced that such a project would decrease gambling related criminal activity. It was reported that a 12-acre site had been allocated on Eilat's northern shore. There are thought to be hundreds of illegal gambling venues in Israel making revenue of several billion dollars each year. (E-02.24.10)
