First casino to attract more visitors and create more jobs

Fiji invites ‘expressions of interest’

Fiji’s Attorney General and Minister for Tourism, Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has said that the government is now inviting expressions of interest for the development and operation of the country’s first casino. The casino development is seen as a means of attracting more visitors, particularly from the new emerging markets in China, India and Europe, and increasing visitor stay. The government is seeking projects from reputable, successful international casino resort developers in order to enhance the Fiji brand image.

Sayed-Khaiyum said, “The obvious economic benefits from such development and which will create another segment in the tourism sector, will be job creation as well as additional revenue for the government.” However, he stressed that the government will ensure the casino development does not erode the strengths of Fiji’s tourism brand. “While casino operations means Fiji is developing leisure activities for the tourism industry, at the same time we do not want to harm Fiji’s tourism brand which the government and the people of Fiji have invested so much in.”

Laws will be put in place to protect the people of Fiji and minimise any possible negative social impacts as a result of casino operations in the country. The proposed laws will be similar to those successfully implemented in Singapore and Malaysia. The invitation for expressions of interest already has been posted in The Economist and soon will be advertised locally and internationally. Specific representations are being made to particular casino operators and developers who have a credible track record. Full details are available on the Fiji government’s website.
