Gateway Casinos puts project on hold

Kamloops expansion must wait

There are four Lake City Casinos in Canada’s British Columbia – in Kamloops, Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton. The Lake City Casinos are part of Gateway Casinos & Entertainment, which was acquired in late 2007 by New World Gaming, the partnership between Australia’s Macquarie Group and Crown Limited. Gateway Casinos completed the purchase of the Lake City Casinos in August 2002.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation, established nearly 30 years ago and invariably known as BCLC, has evolved from a lottery company to an organisation that conducts, manages and operates lottery, casino, chances and community gaming (bingo) and eGaming in the province. The 17 British Columbia casinos are managed in partnership with experienced casino operators such as Gateway and since 1985 BCLC has distributed more than $10 billion in net income to the government.

A proposed plan to replace the casino in Kamloops, presently with a gaming floor of just over 14,000 sq ft, with a new 45,000 sq ft casino has had to be postponed due to the economic downturn. The city has been informed that the company does not have the necessary finances to continue with the development. The Council has taken steps to rescind the property rezoning approval but remains hopeful that when the economic situation improves Gateway will go ahead with its expansion project.
