Last Friday Great Yarmouth Council announced it had chosen Pleasure and Leisure Property Corporation as the preferred bidder for its large casino licence, one of eight awarded under the Gambling Act 2005. Aspers, which is already operating the first large casino opened in Britain – at London’s Stratford City in Newham – struck lucky again last month when Milton Keynes Council selected its application for their large casino licence. Also last Friday, Leeds City Council announced that following the 26 April deadline it had received five applications for its large casino licence.
It is anticipated that these stage one applications for the Leeds casino licence will be considered at a hearing in July following public consultation. Successful applicants will be invited to participate in stage two and the Council then will determine which application should provide the greatest benefit to the city. The large casino licence permits a maximum of 150 gaming machines and a maximum £4000 jackpot. Stage two of the licensing process is expected to conclude in spring 2013.
